During Covid-19 golf companies have needed to find a way to interact with their customers without being able to truly meet face to face in the traditional way. I discussed the Callaway virtual fitting event in a past article and Titleist has decided to also offer distance fittings but instead of fitting clubs they decided to fit for their golf balls.
The Process
To book an appointment I went to the Titleist website and set my appointment date and time. It was a super easy process that required my email, address, and name. Nothing too crazy. A few days before my appointment and then an hour or so below I recieved an email reminding me of my appointment as well as a link to the Zoom chat where the fitting was going to take place. I logged in at my set time and away we went.
The Fitting
I hopped into the call with my fitter David. We exchanged some pleasantries and both lamented how hot DFW is. After that we dove into my game and deciding the right golf ball for me. The first question he asked was What golf ball I was already playing. I answered with the Vice Pro. This tells him a couple of things to start off. It tells him I play a Urethane golf ball so I expect a good amount of spin. It also tells him I am ok with a slightly firmer ball. It also tells him I may be budget conscious. After going through the ball I play and my likes and dislikes we moved the discussion to my ball flight and how I play the game.
The Titleist fitting philosophy
The Titleist system starts with their Green to Tee approach. They focus on how you play shots around the green with chips and pitches and then evaluate how you play into the green. David’s first question about my game was “What is your ball flight” My answer of a draw that can turn to a hook gave him some more crucial information. The draw tends to spin less than a slice or a fade. Its just kind of the nature of that shot. So putting me into a golf ball that spins a little more wont kill me. It will also allow me to play something that spins more so I can hold greens and get a few extra carry yards if possible on my drives. We also talked about the height of my drives and if I wanted it higher or lower. Ive really liked my driver the last year,so we decided to find a ball that wont change that much.
The Results
David and I discussed my thoughts on a Urethane golf ball. I think a Urethane cover is the most important aspect of a golf ball and I can make everything else work. David pushed back on that and explained how Urethane covers are different. After our discussion David recommended the ProV1x. I have always liked the ProV1x but the cost was always a problem. Knowing that David also recommended the new Tour Speed ball.
Final Thoughts
I really liked the fitting. My wife actually commented how quick it was. It took about 15 minutes yet I did learn a little in that time. Its also always interesting to see how the professional fits as well. About a week after the fitting a brown box showed up containing a couple of 2 golf ball sleeves and a fitting guide. Its a nice touch and really allow sme to take the ball out and hit some on course shots with it. Overall an impressive system has been set up by Titleist and for the cost of 0 dollars I think everyone should give it a go!
