Time to talk PXG

A couple of months ago I saw an incredible deal that PXG was offering on their drivers. I took the opportunity to go to the new PXG store in Dallas. I wanted to go through the fitting process and then order the new driver so I could tell you if the $200 driver was worth it.

The Story

Before we go into the product and some of the issues they may be facing lets go back and look at the company history. Bob Parsons who founded Godaddy.com was a huge golfer. Mr Parsons claimed to spending $350,000 a year trying to get the perfect clubs for him. There is no way thats true and if it is his fitter is the most brilliant businessman and also the worst fucking fitter of all time. Bob figured he should just go ahead and open up his own company. He went and hired the top engineers from PING to build the perfect golf club with no cost or time restraints. Their first clubs were INCREDIBLY expensive but PXG really began the new hollow body trend in irons. PXG created the category and in all honesty were the best ones in that category. He then decided to move into the other club categories.

The Club Performance

When I walked into the PXG store I was VERY impressed. Everything was top notch. From the displays, the hitting bays, and the staff. It was all top tier. My fitter was great. I began by warming up then we jumped into it. He asked me the standard questions a good fitter should be asking. Then we took some cuts. I was hitting my driver pretty well. He pulled out this magical $199 dollar that I had come in to hit. If it performed like I was hoping it would be the ultimate game changer. For $250 you could get a brand new driver custom fit for you. Who wouldnt love that? It would be the game changer in the industry. I would scream PXG from the roof tops. I would tell everyone to buy them immediately. The problem became quickly apparent that it wasnt better than the PING. The big hook I can hit with the PING was showing but it was also showing with the PXG. We tried to increase my loft to get more spin. The PXG started getting better. Then we turned the PING sleeve higher than it was and….. I was getting more carry with my PING. We moved off the inexpenisve driver and moved to the regular priced driver (now priced at 349). The results got a little better but the setup that ultimaetly could beat my PING was a $750 set up.

Tour Use

PXG has had a stellar list of PGA pros since their inception and have even racked up some tour wins. No one has ever doubted their irons wedges or putters but some people doubt their woods. This year though we are getting a true test of their drivers. The enigma Patrick Reed is seen rocking a PXG hat in Hawaii and it was confirmed that he was going to be bagging a PXG driver. Suffice to say it hasnt been a good partnership yet… Through the Honda Classic in 2021 Reed was 81st in SG driving. in 2022 that has dropped to 203. We could say its him getting used to the driver but this is REALLY bad. The performance just isnt there.

Final Thoughts

My fitting experience with PXG was top notch. The facility was top tier. The $199 club looked really good but it wasnt the game changer I had hoped for. I was hoping that it was just me but the Reed experiment has me thinking the PXG driver lineup just isnt that great. Their woods arent performing in the fitting bay and out on tour. The massive price cuts and lack of back orders show me they may be sitting on a lot of inventory because its just not very good. Also teaming up with one of the most hated men on tour smells of desperation for relevency. PXG wont die out because Bob has f-you money but it could be getting desperate.
