I thought everyone had pretty much decided on their lineups this year when suddenly a new teaser for Srixon hit social media. As soon as I saw some of the lines I tweeted this:

Little did I know how right I was. I woke up yesterday to the press release from Srixon announcing the all new ZX4.

Whats the ZX4

The ZX4 iron is a hollow bodied iron with a forged face. What does that mean? Awesome ball speeds with an incredible feel. While that is certainly part of the story of the ZX4 its not all of it. You may remember from my story on the rest of the ZX line up the ZX5 had something called “Mainframe”. To sum it up quickly mainframe is a milled pattern in the cavity of the iron consisting of channels, grooves, and cavities to help increase ball speeds. This creates more ball speed and therefore more distance. The second technology is the use of a hollow body. We have seen hollow body irons for a few years now. The purpose of this is to allow companies to really push back and lower that CG while being able to create the thinnest face possible. That low and back CG helps increase forgiveness which is very important in an iron set.To further increase forgiveness Srixon has added tungsten to the sole. This helps lower that CG as well. The lower CG improves launch and spin to help get the ball in the air.

Thicc Irons

Lets not beat around the bush. These irons are chunky. Nothing wrong with it AT ALL. In golf club design club designers always have to sacrifice something. If you want high launch with max forgiveness you have to be willing to get a little heft. With that being said though these irons are not ugly by any means. In fact Id call them nice looking. A little chunky for my personal taste but in no ways is it bad. They dont look like a typical Super Game Improvement iron with plastic badges in the back and clunky looking designs. These are chrome with very little stamping.

Final Thoughts

If you struggle getting the ball up in the air or fight a slice constantly, you’d be hard pressed to find something better than these. I know recently this page has seemed like a huge Srixon fan page but I have to be honest, I play Srixon almost all through the bag. I have Srixon Hybrids, Irons, and Cleveland wedges. If Srixon makes a product I tend to listen. This product rounds out a nice lineup from Srixon Cleveland and it could be time for them to start making their move into more bags!
