The Green Fee It is certainly equipment leak season and I am all about it! today saw the leak of the newest Spider from Taylormade. Lets break down the photo and see what we can figure out about it!
Weight Placement
Looks like this iteration of the spider is going to be very weight forward. Tungsten again leads the way and it is placed on the edges of the putter. This is going ot give it a bunch of stability and prevent rotation of the club face. The less rotation the putter has on off center hits the better. If the face is square you have a good shot at holing the putt. The other very interesting aspect of the putter is the weight up front. That is also a BIG move away from the original spider concept. The original concept was get the weight of the club back and away from the face and create the most stable thing they could. Now they have changed it and made the weight as far forward as possible.
Havent I seen this concept before?
Yes you have! Cleveland introduced a putter JUST THIS YEAR that introduced the idea of no more MOI on putters. They put… tungsten in the toe and the heel and moved all the weight of the putter forward. The Cleveland Frontline is an incredible feeling putter. It rolls the ball true and has that great milled putter feeling. When it came out it aimed to change how people thought of putter design. It may not have worked from a sales stand point but it certainly changed how Taylormade changed the design of their most successful putter.
Same shit different day
Here is where I go on a small rant against Taylormade. This is the second straight design from the Taylormade putter department that is just a BLATANT rip off of another companies putter. First we had the ugly ass Truss putter which is a clear rip off of the Titleist Dead Center. Hell if you really want to nerd out its a rip off of a design from the 1800’s called the Forgan. Then the NEXT DAMN PUTTER they release is a rip off of the Cleveland Frontline. Not only did you copy Cleveland but it goes against the original design philopsphy of the Spider.Before you even start I know that “Every putter is an anser clone” at least everyone knows that. Taylormade should be embarrassed and Cleveland should call their lawyers. Taylormade is probably the second biggest brand in golf. Its about damn time their putting division acts like it.
