Its Monday so that means it is the day to scour the USGA conforming list and see if anyone has had anything sneak on. Well today we got lucky! PING just had an entire G425 series approved. Who’s ready to wildly speculate!?!
The Lineup
PING has 3 drivers in their current line up. They have the Plus which has almost taken over as their standard driver,The SFT is their high launching draw biased driver and the LST is their low launch low spin less forgiving driver.
Ping has moved the LST and the SFT to the G425 line but the Plus has been replaced by MAX. Im guessing max means MAX forgiveness but I am not 100% sure. Lets take a look at some of the things that I can see on the drivers and what they may mean.
PING G425 SFT
As has been usual from the G400 to the G410 and now the G425 this is clearly designed for the golfer who needs help getting the ball to draw. It appears to not have a removeable weight but it does have that external weight on the heel to get as much weight to the heel side to close the face. It also has a long body face to back to promote a low and deep center of gravity to increase forgiveness. Itll be interesting to see what else is happening on the crown and if the Turbulators return.
Ping G425 LST
While I have admittedly never been a huge fan of PING drivers, the LST line from PING in the last few years has been a great lineup. Im excited to see where they take this driver. As I have said in multiple stories already the best way to get low spin is to move that COG low and forward. To do that the LST head is noticeably shorter and rounder than its counterparts.
I also know this doesnt mean much if anything but the driver looks…shinier. Ping Drivers lately have had a matte finish on the bottom and that matte finish has extended up to the crown. With these looking glossier will the crown also be glossy?
PING G425 MAX
This is essentially the regular version of the G425. So waht does that mean? That means this drive will probably fit the most golfers. Its adjustable weight can be positioned in multiple positions to promote a draw or fade. It is going to maximize MOI and give the most forgiveness possible. The weight is shaped differently as well. It is much more noticeable. Could a shape change mean a weight change as well? Could this weight move more mass and affect the ball flight more? It certainly could do that.
Final thoughts
Its going to be interesting for sure. The biggest knock on PING drivers have been the sound so it will be interesting to see how PING addresses that. Do they add Carbon Fiber? Will they tune the inside of the head to fix it? These drivers dont seem to be big time game changers but Im basing that on just a few sole pictures. I would also assume we need to be on the lookout for some irons soon as well.
