New Callaway Big Bertha B21!

If you talk to even the most casual golfer and asked them to name a golf club they would probably say Big Bertha. It is one of the most recognizable names in golf and anytime a club comes out bearing the Big Bertha name its worth talking about.

The Lineup

Calalway went all out with the Big Bertha B21 line. If you want to get your entire bag from Driver, Fairway wood, hybrid, irons, and wedges, the Big Bertha B21 has you covered.

If I were to ask you the most dominant shot shape of weekend golfers you most likely would say its a slice. Well all of these clubs are set up for you to either eliminate that shot or help keep you straighter.

How did they accomplish it?

The short and simple answer is low spin. As a general rule slices are shots that have a ton of spin. So if you reduce spin it should reduce the amount in which the ball slices. Now the biggest question is how do you reduce spin without killing forigveness. Well Callaway decided to push the center of gravity low and slightly forward. This will certainly be a spin killer but it can hurt forgiveness. To add back the forgiveness the driver is heavily weighted in the heel and has a more upright lie angle than a normal driver. This helps move the ball left (for a RH golfer). SO if we can make sure the ball goes left with some weighting and lie angles AND reduce spin. We could have a BIG TIME winner. The most intriguing part of the driver is the fact that they accomplished a draw bias driver with out massive amounts of offset.

In the irons the technology is also top notch. The irons were designed to help high handicaps hit the ball higher and to reduce their slice. How do we launch the ball higher? We move weight low to the ground. Well Callaway obviously knows this and made the sole on these irons quite large. The wide sole moves weight low and helps increase launch. Callaway also placed tungsten low deep. That moved the weight low and back as well. This is obviously to create that higher launch. Now that we have accomplished a higher launch, We need to address the shot shape. Well how do we do this? We put in a ton of offset. That helps getting the face shut and getting the ball to draw.

My Thoughts

Honestly these clubs are not for better players or even mediocore players. These are for the folks who struggle to hit it straight and cant get the ball in the air. I think Callaway found a market they wanted to sell to and they have nailed it. All the design concepts are tried and true to help these types of players. It will be interesting to see if the low spin for higher handicaps works. I am also fascinated with the re-release of the RCH shafts. These were a classic shaft that really helped make the Big Bertha one of the all time greats.

As far as the looks, its nothing spectacular. The driver looks alright. Kind of dated but not awful. For 499.99 I’d expect some more pizzaz. It looks like a mash up of the last 5 Big Bertha drivers. The irons on the other hand are very plain and quite honestly disappointing. I know the person playing these rarely plays but for the price they should get something MUCH better. These irons look like they come in a cardboard box with a bag and putter included.

TL:DR

Callaway always seems ot release a Super Game Improvement line up mid golf season for higher handicaps to buy and get prepared for their fall charity events. Overall the performanace should be great despite not having great looks
