The company I said would be the golf company of the year released their new irons and we need to talk about it! The highly anticipated Forged Tec lineup was released today.
3 irons?
My 9-5 job is as a sales rep and when I discuss products that are similar yet different I like to describe them as in the same family but each have unique things about them that make them who they are. With that in mind lets talk about the things that make the irons similar. As with most things Cobra is putting out the focus is on the PWRSHELL. The PWRSHELL has been around for years and it is something Cobra focuses on with every release. As you can imagine the PWRSHELL has gotten lighter and flexier meaning you are getting more distance. We are also getting some adjustments to the placement of tungsten to help tweak ball flight.
All 3 models are hollow body construction and Cobra is squarely in the foam category. Unlike their competitors Cobra isnt really telling us that their foam increases speed. They are focused pretty heavilly on how the foam affects sound and feel. The past Forged Tec irons felt good and hopefully these feel even better

Forged Tec X
In 2022 Cobra has added a new iron to the lineup. The Forged Tec X is the new guy on the block. The creation of the X has allowed Cobra to really create clubs that work for everyone. The X is the more game improvement club of the two. Cobra is promoting the original Forged Tec as the club for 0-10 handicaps but the new X is going to be for the 10+ handicap. With that you can expect some thicker top lines and a little more offset.
As we all know the thing that sells clubs especially in this new golfer market is distance. For years companies have been using stronger lofts to get more distance. The Cobras are no different. We ar elooking at a 42(!) degree PW and an obnoxius 27 degree 7 iron. I have defended manufactures for years saying the design of the clubs almost requires some loft jacking but this feels like we are on the edge of a cliff. If some one is playing these irons they may not hit anything better than their 6 iron. Hell my 4 iron is 23 degrees and I consider putting a Hybrid in most of the time. I couldnt imagine my 6 iron being 23 degrees! As I said in my fitting series make sure you are looking at more than distance. Check you spin and descent angle.

Forged Tec and Forged Tec One Length
The creation of the Forged Tec X really allowed Cobra to refine the Forged Tec and lean into the fact better players will want to use this to gain a few extra yards but not have some big thick club to do it. They designed an iron for the better player who wants a little help but wants to maintain some of the playability of the club. In this years model you are getting 20 grams of Tungsten positioned low and center to help optimize launch.
If you are a fan of the one length clubs they will also be releasing these in a one length option as well. It snot for me but when you have the most well known one length-er of all time it makes sense to make them available to the masses.

Final Thoughts
I have always been a fan of Cobra irons and honestly these look really good. The most exciting aspect is the refined looks. The last model while it looked good it had too much of a futeristic look while these have a much more classic look to them. Honestly the first model looked like a company who figured out how to do something and cosmetics were an after thought where these feel much more like a refinement of the internals and an overhaul of the cosmetics. Overall a winner in my book but Ill have to swing them to decide!
