One of my absolute favorite putters to recommend to people looking to upgrade their putters is the Wilson Infinite. They are beautiful putters, well made, and super affordable ($130.00). When I heard some rumblings of a new Wilson Staff putter lineup I got super excited. The new Wilson Staff Model putters are absolutely beautiful but there is a MAJOR issue brewing
The Putters
Wilson is offering a very nice looking lineup. There will be 4 models fully milled out of 304 Stainless Steel. It starts with the basic Anser shaped head named the BL22. If youve seen aa putter you know exactly the shape I’m talking about. This one is very good looking but nothing earth shattering. IF a mid-mallet is more your style the MT-22 is going to be more of your jam. The slant neck provides some toe hang. I am a big fan of the shape. The rounded yet somehow square shape looks great in my opinion. One of my favorite shapes is the TM22. It takes on the Odyssey #7 shape. That really cool and stable fang design. The final and what people seem to be most excited about is the 8802 heel shafted putter. Its a classic design that is still popular. Its not for me but it is a cool throwback design.
The Elephant in the room
Let’s just get this out of the way. This putter is going to run you $350. I dont want to be the guy who says that these putters arent beautiful. They are. I think they are going to be VERY high quality. Here’s the issue though, no one is paying $350 for a fucking Wilson putter. I am a massive Wilson fan. My first set was a box set from Wilson and I would LOVE a set of D9 forged or the Staff model CB. Hell one of my first stories was on their ill fated try of the Baller Box. Looking at a putter for $350 opens up a bunch of very high quality putters. Just perusing Golf Galaxy I found a ton of putters for $350 bucks. The new PING lineup is $279. The Taylormade Spider GT is $349. I can get a Cobra 3D printed Putter for $349 and finally the Odyssey 11 lineup is $299. These brands move the needle and frankly Wilson struggles to do that. They should live in the Infinite lineup.
I will also say the absolute worst part of this lineup is the fact you cannot currently get these built to spec. You can not get the lie angle bent or the loft changed. I was fit for a putter and know I need my putter about 2 degrees flat and at 3 degrees of loft. Its insane that you are going premium and cant get it customized. They are talking about how this is their tour line etc, yet they wont give us tour like options
Final Thoughts
A supreme disappointment from Wilson. I am sure they are going to be beautiful putters that perform. I just dont see anyone buying a $350 Wilson. Especially one that they cant customize. It will get some people picking up the 8802 model. They re-released the 8802 back in 2014. If you gave Wilson some Truth Serum they would probably say those didnt sell as well as they hoped. I have no idea what Wilson is trying to do as a brand. This launch makes 0 sense in my opinion.
