Some of the most interesting late season launches come from Callaway. A few years ago we got the amazing EPIC Flash series. A few months ago we got the full face Jaws and Super Hybrid lineups. Today we are getting a new Hybrid-Fairway wood combo.

What is it?
While a Hybrid is a combination of a iron and Fairway Wood, this UW is going to be a combination of the FW and Hybrid. If you’re expecting to go out and hit towering bombs with this, you’ll be disappointed. Try the Super Hybrid. If you’re somebody who has constantly said they need something between that 5 wood and your first hybrid, or want to replace your 5 wood, the UW is going to be your jam.

Why create this?
That was my first question as well. We have hybrids that we can get at 17 and 19 degrees, and we have FW that can do the same thing. The biggest issue it appears Callaway wanted to fix was in the weighting of the club. Their 5 woods have an inherent draw bias due to their weighting. These provide the higher lofts while giving a neutral balance. So why not a hybrid? The hybrid is going to spin less than the UW. The UW will fly higher and land softer giving the golfer a better chance at holding the green.

Wait! Didn’t we see this earlier this year?
….yep. Cleveland introduced this idea months ago. They even call their a HY-Wood. It’ll be interesting during testing to see how different these are. Callaway uses the Apex name for better players while the Cleveland Halo line up is geared towards the higher handicap. Could be a case of the same idea for different purposes.

Final Thoughts / Details
Its an interesting product and one that is already super popular on social media. The folks who have hit it love it. I do wonder how different it will be from the Cleveland but if it’s good enough for Phil it’s good enough for me.
It’s available in 3 lofts 17,19,21. Comes stock with a Project X smoke RDX shaft. For even more details head on over to Callawaygolf.com
