I think one of the most underrated names in the golf equipment game is Wilson Staff. Anytime they release something it usually catches my attention. The most recent Staff blade was great as was the D7 line. I have hit a Wilson Staff tour level ball before and it performed great!
The Golf Ball
The ball is a lot like most tour balls. In my opinion the most important part of the ball is the cover. You can have as many layers that you want but if you have a bad cover the performance wont be there. Luckily Wilson gave this ball the tour treatment. The ball comes with a seamless 3six2 Urethane cover. For a tour level ball this is a must. Urethane golf balls give the most control over spin and shot shape. They are generally softer than other materials. This does mean they are not quite as durable but thats the trade off.
Wilson has always been known for very soft golf balls. The Duo may be the softest feeling golf ball I have ever hit. Feels like a marshmallow. The Duo Urethane is the same story. While Wilson hasnt come out and given the compression for this golf ball they do mention the soft core multiple times on their website. It would be hard to imagine this ball doesnt follow the same. Lately another wbesite has been promoting “slow is soft”. The counteract this Wilson has said they have redesigned their core to promote maximum velocity. Will it work? Time will tell
Baller Box
First off, great name. Love it! Now what is it? Lately subscription boxes are all the rage. Hell my wife does… 2 or 3. I did one for a while but figured out it wasnt for me. With that being said seeing one for golf balls is an intriguing idea. Well this is what Wilson is trying to introduce to the market. A monthly shipment of customized golf balls. You can either get a custom number or a personalized phrase delivered in a cool looking box. I love when companies think outside of the box on ways to innovate and bring their products to consumers. That being said I do hope this is the first iteration and some changes are made at a later time.
The biggest I see with the program is the fact the Baller Box is the only way to get these golf balls. The one dozen price is pretty steep at 49.99 a box. Thats higher than you can get the industry leader ProV1 at PGA Tour Superstore. Granted the ProV1 doesnt have the custom aspect. I can see it being very difficult for folks to change from a ProV to the Staff ball without hitting it. That would be easier if the ball was 35 dollars or even 40 but at 50 it is going to be hard to get the conversions. Now the price goes down if you do it for a longer period but it will be difficult to commit to a a new ball for a year without trying it first.
Wilson said Sike! They have suspended the Baller Box model and are actually going to follow the model of DTC golf ball brands like Vice and Snell. THe more you buy the more you save.
Interesting turn of events. Wonder if with so many people losing their jobs if this plays a roll in their strategy.
Final Thoughts
Overall I love Wilson for trying something new. When I was in the industry working they were one of if not my favorite OEM partner. Super nice folks over there. I think they make a quality product and I am sure this golf ball is no different. I hope folks give this awesome idea a chance.
[…] I love me some raw golf clubs. I love how they look and how they feel. Wilson has released a few raw irons and wedges. They have taken this to the next level and released a “raw” golf ball. If youre like me you are wondering wait! Didnt Wilson release a golf ball a while ago? Yes they did! I wrote about it here! […]
[…] I would LOVE a set of D9 forged or the Staff model CB. Hell one of my first stories was on their ill fated try of the Baller Box. Looking at a putter for $350 opens up a bunch of very high quality putters. Just perusing Golf […]
